ABSTRACT

After two years of online learning, minor changes happened in some tiny places which we may not always notice. These changes may impact the school management, education arrangement, and curriculum design: what do students expect from their teachers, and the school? Are they expecting forever online learning, and getting their degree completely online? In this study, we examined 93 final-year students from the school of computing science which mainly used work-based learning applied to learn pedagogy. We analyze their viewpoint on how COVID-19 changed their understanding of teaching and learning: what is the role of teachers and students? And how do they see the arrangement for the internship program? We found that over 92% of students agree that a creditable degree can better secure a job;over 68% of the students believed that face-to-face teaching is still a better choice, but at the same time, over 73% wish to have the materials recorded so that they can access them at their convenience time. We also examined some of the course design elements, especially those related to the internship program, to achieve a possible curriculum improvement for the students in the Asia Pacific region. © 2022 ACM.

ABSTRACT

Disasters are increasingly becoming more destructive in their impacts. Lives have been lost and properties damaged due to the lack of institutional and personnel coping and adaptive capacities. Several policies in the Philippines have noted the importance of capacity development in implementing Disaster Risk Management (DRM). To meet the above necessity, in 2017, Philippine School of Business Administration (PSBA), Manila, one of the higher education institutions pioneered a specialization of DRM in its existing Master in Business Administration program. However, meeting the demand for Disaster Risk Management Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DRM-TVET) through Formal Degree Program (FDP) and keeping FDP sustainable is still facing a number of challenges. The main drivers of these challenges include but are not limited to the following: time constraint on the part of participants to complete 2–4 years' FDP;lack of institutions offering DRM-TVET programs;and unavailability of a Learning Management System. The main objective of this research is to develop an Alpha-Flexible Ladderized Capacity Building Model (A-FLCBM) amid COVID-19. Further, the study should also provide logical flow and recommendations to operationalize the remaining activities of the Conceptual Framework in developing the Beta (B)-FLCBM amidst COVID-19. In this regard, the researchers collected pertinent data through a substantive, thorough, sophisticated literature review and examined the available mandates on existing Flexible ladderized models. Further, a Conceptual Framework (CF) is also developed and partially operationalized. The output allowed researchers to develop A- FLCBM amidst COVID-19 using the PSBA curriculum as a pilot case. However, the framework activities, i.e., dry run, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) registration for National Certification (NC), development of B-FLCBM, and the empirical assessment of DRM-TVET and FDP sustainability will be covered in future studies. The A-FLCBM comprises of interrelated activities including mode of learning and well-designed DRM NC short courses, workshops, and trainings for the trainers. The Model is aligned with the Executive Order 358, promulgated in 2004. Further, the Ladderized Education (LE) system introduced through Commission on Higher Education Memorandum Order No. 43, 2008 Series, was also considered for wider-scale and accelerated implementation of LE nationwide and globally. The implementation of B-FLCBM will provide a unique opportunity to develop the skills required to be a professional in the DRM and business continuity field, improving the quality of life and raising awareness on the importance of preventing and mitigating disasters and reducing the loss incurred by countries in terms of lives, property, and economy. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. ABSTRACT

Person-environment fit theory (PE-fit) theory emphasises a match between a person's attribute (P) and the workplace environment (E). However, a differential predictions hypothesis emphasises the different contributions of personal and environmental inputs to outcomes. Higher education students in Hong Kong (N = 380) completed a survey on their personal interest (P) and the contemporary threatening environment (E) (fear of pandemic, social unrest, international disputes) related to tourism-related outcomes (intent to join tourism, lifelong commitment, leadership, and anxiety) during COVID-19. Structural equation modelling found that P strongly predicted Intent, Lifelong, and Leadership, whereas E strongly predicted Anxiety, supporting the differential predictions hypothesis. PE-fit (P × positive E) predicted Intent in addition to the prediction of P, supporting the PE-fit hypothesis. The findings imply the different merits of PE-fit and differential predictions hypotheses for various vocational outcomes, and the importance of reinforcing students' interest to launch their career in challenging times. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

To analyse democratic and legal labour relations in the current conditions of economic and social development means, first and foremost, to highlight their essence and main features, as well as the development trends and future improvements of these relations. The year 2021, like 2020, has been characterized, among others, by the COVID-19 pandemic. This has produced various effects. As an effort to mitigate these effects, the Government of Kosovo has undertaken measures to support employment through the economic recovery package. Based on this context, the main and only purpose of the 1st Measure of economic recovery is the support of employment. Active employment measures have played a very important role in the integration of unemployed persons into the labour market. One of these measures with the largest number of beneficiaries is Vocational Training. Vocational training is a fundamental and very important process to get a job. In this sense, even the latest statistical data (2021) of the official authorities of Kosovo prove that the largest beneficiaries of active labour market measures are the persons who have undergone vocational training. The purpose of Vocational Training is to enable an increase or adoption of professional knowledge, namely to acquire additional knowledge, skills and abilities to perform efficient work, in order to increase the prospect of employment or retain their employment. Based on the international aspect, employment and the labour market are under the pressure of many factors, such as demographic, technological, economic and political ones;therefore, vocational training is considered as one of the most successful active labour market measures. © 2023, Institute for Human Rehabilitation. ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the impact of the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as an intervention factor on residency training at different stages, and look into the enhancement effect of post-graduation medical training program based on competency of residency training, so as to provide reference for the optimization of medical education at the postgraduate stage. Methods After the initial success of COVID-19 prevention and control, 169 clinical postdoctoral trainess(clinical postdocs) and 515 graduate students specializing in clinical medicine(professional postdocs) were surveyed by an anonymous online questionnaire. To analyze the differences of cognition and self- evaluation of core competence between the two groups. Results There were 141 valid questionnaires collected from clinical postdocs (83.43%, 141/169) and 264 valid questionnaires collected from professional postdocs (51.26%, 264/515). In both groups, more than 85% of the students agreed or strongly agreed that they had a deeper understanding of the profession of doctors during the epidemic. The results of competency self-evaluation showed that, except for the items of "self-improvement", the self-evaluation scores of clinical postdoctoral students on other items were significantly higher than those of professional postdoctoral students (all P <0.05). Conclusions COVID-19, as a factor of emergency intervention, can improve the competency cognition of residents. The core-competency based post-graduation medical education model can comprehensively improve the students' comprehensive ability, which is an effective training program for residents. It is suggested that the vocational planning education for residents should be paid attention to in the stage of college education, and a new mode of college education that is closely combined with the post-graduation education should be further explored.Copyright © 2021 Thomson Reuters and Contributors.

ABSTRACT

Objectives. The aim of this study was to explore self-reported changes in personal development and meaning in life of older adults in the Netherlands during the COVID-19 pandemic and characteristics of the groups that reported these changes. Methods. Older adults from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam completed a questionnaire on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were asked to rate changes in personal development and meaning in life. These variables were descriptively analysed and logistic regression analyses were used to explore characteristics of the groups that reported these changes. Results. Of the 1099 older adults (aged 62–102 years), 25.7% paid more attention to things one enjoys doing in spare time, 36.6% reflected more on important things in life, and 16.8% made less future plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-reported changes in meaning in life and personal development differed between specific subgroups of older adults. The largest changes in aspects of personal development and meaning in life were reported by older adults who experienced personal adverse experiences such as death of a loved one (ORs 2.03) and/or health problems such as functional limitations (ORs ranging from 1.59 to 2.84) and depression (ORs ranging from 1.69 to 2.77). Discussion and Implications. A substantial share of the participants reported changes in specific aspects of personal development and meaning in life. This was especially true for certain subgroups of older adults. Relatives and caregivers should be aware of changes in personal development and meaning in life since lower scores are known to be associated with poor physical, psychological, and social well-being outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Virtual reality systems have been developed primarily for the entertainment sector. However, they are being increasingly considered as high potential tools for use in industry and education. In this context, schools are now facing a challenge to introduce virtual-reality-supported teaching into their processes. With this in mind, the authors, in their paper, focus on the possibility for using virtual excursions as part of vocational education and training. For this purpose, they analyze the suitability and usability of selected virtual reality systems, as well as relevant camera systems, for the creation of virtual reality software products designed for industrial practice in upper secondary vocational schools' apprenticeships (vocational education and training). The main results of their analyses are summarized in the form of tabularized SWOT parameters.

ABSTRACT

This paper presents evidence on the short and long-term impact of the COVID-19 crisis on India's rural youth. We interviewed about 2,000 vocational trainees from Bihar and Jharkhand three times after the first national lockdown in 2020, between June 2020 and December 2021. We find that a third of respondents who were in salaried jobs pre-lockdown lost their jobs, and half of those who worked out of state returned home shortly after the lockdown. We report a stark difference between men and women: while many male workers took up informal employment, most female workers dropped out of the labour force. In the second part of the paper, we use a randomised experiment to document the effects of a government-supported digital platform designed to provide jobs to low-skilled workers. The platform turned out to be difficult to use and publicised only few job ads. We find no effect on job search intensity or employment. Our findings suggest that bridging the gap between rural young workers and urban formal labour markets requires more active and targeted policy interventions, especially for female workers. © 2023 The Authors

ABSTRACT

Reports an error in "Same, but different? Digital transformation in swiss vocational schools from the perspectives of school management and teachers" by Martina Rauseo, Andreas Harder, Deborah Glassey-Previdoli,, Alberto Cattaneo, Stephan Schumann and Serge Imboden (Technology, Knowledge and Learning: Learning mathematics, science and the arts in the context of digital technologies, Advanced Online Publication, Dec 5, 2022, np). In the original online version of this article, several author's corrections were missed to be carried out before publication. The original article has been corrected. (The following of the original article appeared in record 2023-27273-001). The COVID-19 pandemic has further highlighted the importance of the digital transformation of educational organizations. The effects of this transformation process are not limited to the classroom level but extend into various areas of the school, such as Equipment and Technology, Strategy and Leadership, Organization, Employees, and Culture. Against this background, we assessed the status quo of the digital transformation in Swiss vocational schools from the perspective of both school management members and teachers. For this endeavor, two surveys were conducted: the first one in the period from November 2019 to January 2020 (school management members) and the second one between June and September 2020 (teachers). In total, 202 school management members and 1,739 teachers from 62 schools participated in the study. The results of the analyses indicate that the digitization-related dimensions of Strategy and Leadership, as well as Pedagogical IT Support, were perceived better by school management members, whereas teachers considered the areas of Digital Competencies, Attitudes, and Culture to be more advanced. Furthermore, linear regression models show that the dimensions considered important when assessing the status quo of digital transformation differ between the groups. The results emphasize the importance of communication between and the inclusion of all school stakeholders for the successful management of the digital transformation. ABSTRACT

Higher vocational education is developing vigorously, it is urgent to improve the teaching effect. In order to verify whether an optimized blended learning mode has a significant positive impact on the learning presence, learning attitude and motivation of vocational students, 92 vocational students from two teaching classes were taken as research objects to conduct a 3-month quasi-experimental study. Covariate analysis and paired sample T-test were used to process the pre-and post-test data, and it was found that the influence on the sense of presence was F=4.335, P=0.000<0.001, and the influence on learning attitude and motivation was F=3.957, P=0.000<0.05, both of which reached a significant level. It is concluded that the optimized blended learning model and simple blended learning model have significant positive effects on the learning presence, learning attitude and motivation of vocational students. Vocational colleges should vigorously promote blended learning optimized according to different courses, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, which should become the new normal.

ABSTRACT

The rapid development of modern information and communication technologies affects all spheres of human life, including the educational sphere. Moreover, today the objective circumstance of the hard introduction of distance education and online learning technologies into the educational process is the global spread of the "new disaster” of the 21st century – COVID-19. Under completely new conditions, it is necessary to restructure the educational process and, in particular, its methodological component in a short time. But until recently, one could hear about the use of digital technologies, online learning, including distance learning, as an innovative form of the educational process, and now the use of digital distance learning technologies in education does not surprise anyone and does not raise doubts. Internet resources, computer and mobile technologies are widely used by teachers in the educational process, and therefore there is a need to study the possibilities of using modern information and communication technologies in teaching, in particular, in the field of teaching foreign languages. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

This qualitative case study aimed to identify if high school vocational educators were able to teach a vocational trade effectively and progressively through an online learning platform during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since vocational educators teach most of their lessons through practical hands-on learning with direct supervision in their respective shop classes, educators can argue that transitioning to an online platform would hinder their kinesthetic instruction. Also, to determine if there were any practical options through an online format. If not, did the educators notice a student's skill set in their specific trade subside requiring additional training to get back to a proficient level? Vocational curriculums need students to reach a practical competency before moving on to the practical assessment;identifying effective ways to evaluate practical hands-on learning has steered this study in a direction that has assisted in building an alternative to the online platform. The study has shown that before the pandemic the students were advancing their hands-on practical skill set for their respective trade, but upon returning to in-person classes the majority of the participants stated their student's skill set had regressed. Determining another way to ensure vocational educators can prevent students from falling behind if an event such as a pandemic should happen again is a necessity moving forward. ABSTRACT

At the institutional level, Chilean universities and Vocational Education and Training (VET) institutions have made significant investments in information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as virtual platforms, learning technologies, and streamlining bureaucratic processes related to university management among others. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, there was already a significant use of ICT resources, especially in many post-graduate programs, which were offered in online or blended learning modalities. The main goals of the study were to explore students' perceptions from a Chilean vocational school (post-secondary education) and university of applied sciences, with campuses (more than 27) in all regions of Chile about the use of ICTs and educational technologies, and to know about the participants' attitudes towards the educational use of ICTs and other educational software. Based on scientific literature and their previous experience in research projects about the use of ICTs and the development of a didactical strategy to incorporate educational technologies in the learning process of engineering students, the authors developed a categories system with indicators for the instrument design. The instrument consists of a questionnaire with closed (25 items) and open-ended questions (3) organized into eight main categories with their respective items. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are newly established (since 2010–11) technical and vocational secondary schools in England, catering for young people aged 14–19. The schools focus strongly on delivering vocational, alongside Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)-focused academic, qualifications. The colleges have been introduced as a new means of improving technical and vocational education and training—a sector which in England has faced problems of low quality and low esteem—and in a wider international context of STEM-trained worker shortages. University Technical Colleges have been advertised as offering state-of-the-art vocational learning, involving access for students to the latest equipment and technologies in key industrial sectors, alongside extensive project-based learning in partnership with employers. However, how have UTC students fared in these respects since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic and associated lockdowns in 2020? In this paper we report on results from a survey of 252 students across two UTCs in England, exploring the technical and vocational learning experiences of these students during the exceptional 2019–20 academic year. Findings from the survey reveal lost learning and training opportunities during the pandemic, particularly where courses with practical elements relied on specific equipment and facilities that became inaccessible during lockdown. The survey also highlights disruptions to apprenticeship arrangements, work experience plans and other engagement with employers. Students in some instances have been effectively forced to stay on in education owing to reduced apprenticeship and employment opportunities for school-leavers. We find evidence of students adapting their aspirations and career goals to the new economic circumstances. © 2023 The Authors. ABSTRACT

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the whole world, thus also affecting the high school graduates in Croatia. Aim(s): The purpose of the study was to examine the psychological distress high school graduates experienced during the COVID-19 social distancing measures, more precisely to investigate gender and school type differences and to examine the relationship between psychological distress and self-regulated learning. Method(s): In this cross-sectional study, an online questionnaire was administered to 13,037 high school graduates across Croatia. Result(s): The results show that girls exhibit higher levels of psychological distress compared to the boys, while the art school graduates show the highest distress, followed by gymnasium (i.e., secondary grammar school, prep school) graduates, and lastly vocational school graduates. Furthermore, a moderate negative correlation was found between self-efficacy and psychological distress, and significant, but small correlations were found between regulation of effort, management of work, time and environment, self-handicapping as well as elaboration and psychological distress. These results show that higher levels of self-regulation are connected to lower levels of psychological distress. Conclusion(s): These findings demonstrate that a need exists for greater accessibility of mental health care for adolescents.Copyright © 2022 The Authors. ABSTRACT

For more than 70 years, the federal government has supported efforts to improve adult literacy and other basic skills. Many adults need help with basic skills like reading, writing, mathematics, and English proficiency to succeed in the American workforce. Congress has long provided resources to help individuals address these educational challenges, most recently through Title II of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) of 2014. But WIOA includes new requirements and incentives to strengthen the link between adult education and the overall workforce development system, to move adults into and along a career pathway. This report from a national evaluation of Title II examines the extent to which local adult education providers' instructional approaches and coordination with other agencies reflect this link and highlights the challenges providers experience in collecting related performance data. The report describes providers' reported experiences in program year 2018-19, the first year when the more than 1,600 providers receiving federal Title II funds were expected to operate under WIOA's rules and before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted provider operations. ABSTRACT

Alternate : Teaching philosophy during the pandemic was a challenge from a pedagogical perspective, as it required those involved in the educational process to overcome the digital divide. Now, it is crucial, following De Sousa Santos, to look at the lessons the virus taught us in this regard, and that is the primary purpose of this paper. Particularly, we reflect on the role of gamification as a pedagogical tool in the teaching of philosophy at the Universidad de Pamplona in Colombia. Based on our analysis, it is argued that teaching philosophy amid the health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus mainly posed a didactic and pedagogical challenge. This challenge, indeed, highlighted the need for interactivity and the instruction of the different philosophy courses in a synchronous format via an online learning platform. Another challenge identified here was incorporating gamification into the teaching practices and evaluation processes in e-learning environments. In conclusion, the Universidad de Pamplona has been implementing synchronous and asynchronous remote activities through its virtual learning environment to encourage learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together, and learning to be.
